To say the Varsity Football team hasn’t had much success in its recent meetings with Battle Creek Lakeview would be an understatement. Heading into the game Friday night, Lakeview had won the last 10 in a row in the series by scoring 443 points to the Knights 129.
Things changed Friday as a rejuvenated Loy Norrix squad rallied back in the second half. The Knights trailed 18-6 at halftime but 22 straight points put the Knights in the lead 28-18. Sophomore Derrell Mabon had TD runs of 61, 54, and 31 to ignite the offense.
Lakeview would not crumble as the Spartans went down the field in 50 seconds to cut the lead to 28-25. The Knights would answer to push the lead to 34-25. The Spartans again quickly responded and cut the Loy Norrix lead to 34-32 with just under 5 minutes left.
The Knights had a key drive down to the Lakeview 15 before turning the ball over on downs. The Spartans had 2 minutes and no timeouts to move the ball into field goal range. Big runs for Lakeview put the ball at the LN 30 with about 15 seconds left. The next play was a run stopped short of the first down and the time ran out and Loy Norrix held on 34-32 in a front of a big homecoming crowd at Lakeview.
The Knights (2-5) will travel to Stevensville Lakeshore (6-1) on Friday for a 7:00 kickoff. The Lancers lead the overall series 9-2 winning the last 9 straight. The last Loy Norrix win over Lakeshore was in 1978.
