Alex Elwell has commanded the pitching mound for the last four years for the softball Knights. Her senior year has been a memorable one for the Knights as they have rattled off 22 wins against only 9 losses. The team finished 2nd in the SMAC East and have battled with some of the elite teams in the area and state.
Tuesday was a typical team and Elwell performance as they rolled over rival Kalamazoo Central 10-0 in five innings for their third win over the Giants. This win happened in the quarterfinal round of the MHSAA District 1 Tournament at Portage Central and ended the season for the Giants.
Elwell pitched a one hitter and had three RBIs. She is headed to Wayne State to continue her softball career next year.
The team advances to the semi-final round of the District Tournament on Saturday to face top ranked Portage Central. The game will be played at Portage Central at Noon. The Knights have not faced the Mustangs this season. With this being a state tournament game, all of the pressure sits squarely on the Mustangs. If the Knights let loose and have fun, minimize or eliminate mistakes, they have the pitcher who can keep them in the game.
The other semi-final pits #4 ranked and defending state champion Mattawan against Portage Northern at 10:00 A.M. All games are at Portage Central.
The two semi-final winners will play at 2:00 P.M. in the final with the winner advancing to the Portage Northern Regional on Saturday, June 9th.
